This week, we practiced all our new and familiar unit words in order to talk about our school as well as write down words and answer questions.
We talked about the different rooms in the school and who can be found in each room. For example, Ms. Moore can be found sitting in the Principal's office because she is the school principal while Mr. Tony can be found in the gym because he is the PE teacher. We also practiced classroom items. However, this week we did not just say the words, we also read and wrote down these different vocabulary words. We continue to practice the song from Moana, "We Know the Way". We now know most of the song and will begin practicing it during morning assemblies from time to time. One skill that we focused on a lot this week was reading. In order to practice our letter recognition, we used cut-up song lyrics from familiar songs. We tried to put the lyrics back together by singing the song and putting the sentences in the correct order. You can practice this at home. Files with color-coded familiar songs can be found in games and worksheets section under Additional Resources. You can print out the lyrics and cut them up at home. A new topic that we discussed more in depth this week was how we get to school in the morning. Students spent some time learning and reviewing transportation words and discussing which form of transportation they use to get to school and how long it takes them. The words, questions, and sentences that we practiced can be found in the vocabulary section under Additional Resources. Next week we will continue to discuss what is and is not in our classroom, and how many of each item are in the classroom. We will practice both speaking and writing questions and answers related to this topic. We will also learn how to say different school subjects in Hebrew and compare an Israeli student's class schedule to their own.

This week we continued the school unit and discussed the different rooms and people that make a school. The new vocabulary can be found in the Additional Resources section.
We created maps of Sela and labeled our maps in Hebrew. You will see these maps at Back to School Night this week. We look forward to meeting you in person very soon! This week we focused on vocabulary related to the classroom. For a full list of classroom items and games to practice this new vocabulary, check out the vocabulary section and games and worksheets section under Additional Resources. Students can practice these new words by just listening and/or reading in Hebrew. One game that we played several times throughout the week was Uno. Check out our Hebrew Uno skills in the videos below! Next week we will expand on our knowledge of classroom vocabulary and discuss the different areas that make up a school (hallways, offices, lunch room, etc.). We will also create maps of Sela and label them in Hebrew. You will be able to see our maps at Back to School Night! This week we practiced reading letters with different vowel sounds. We did this by playing fun games such as battleships and the running game. If you would like to play battleships at home, I am attaching the document below. If you would like a hard copy, I can print some out per your request and send it home with students next week.

This week we also learned about the city of Natanya, which is the name of our 2nd grade class. Natanya is a city north of Tel Aviv. It is situated on the Mediterranean coast. Here are some videos of Natanya: This week, we began reviewing the Hebrew alphabet and vowel sounds. Here is an explanation of the letter Shin and Sinn: שׁ When the dot appears on the top right of the letter, the letter is called "Shin" and makes the -SH sound. שׂ When the dot appears on the top left side, the letter is called "Sinn" and makes the -S sound In Hebrew, we often have symbols under, above, or next to the letter to symbolize a vowel sound. This saves us space and time because we do not always need to write an extra letter to represent the vowel in the word. Here are some examples that we learned this week: שָׁ If there is a symbol that looks like a plus sign under the letter, it is the "a" vowel sound. So, the letter above makes the sound "SHA" שִׂ If there is a dot below the letter, than the "ee" vowel sound is added to the consonant. So, the letter above makes the "SEE" sound because it is the letter Sinn with a dot below it. Here are some examples that we practiced in class: SHA - שָׁ SA - שָׂ SHEE - שִׁ SEE - שִׂ Next week we will continue to learn how to read and write in Hebrew.
